Rates, Packages, Payment Terms, and Special Offers
RATES
In general, my rates fall within the ranges listed on the chart provided by the Editorial Freelancers Association: https://www.the-efa.org/rates/. Beyond that, I base my rates on my assessment of the tasks and the material. I usually find it’s best to estimate based on sample pages or the full project, but I can provide a general estimate based on manuscript page count as well.
Indexing: Indexing rates depend on type of publication, type of indexing (standard back-of-book or embedded) timeframe, and specification.
Proofreading: Proofreading rates depend on type of material, editorial vs. cold proofread, and time frame.
Combined index and proofreading: If indexing and proofreading can be completed simultaneously, I can usually offer a lower combined rate encompassing both.
Copyediting/line editing: Rates for editing depending on level of edit and timeframe. Bibliographic formatting is charged at a higher rate.
Developmental editing: Rates for developmental indexing depend on the complexity of material and the degree of editing needed. If needed, developmental editing can be combined with line editing.
Manuscript evaluation: Manuscript evaluation can be an economical option if full developmental editing is not an option for you.
Formatting: Formatting rates depend on the specific tasks required.
PACKAGES
Package rates are flat rates available to cover book shepherding and for any projects that encompasses multiple tasks. These generalized rates simplifying the estimation and billing process.
SPECIAL OFFERS
Advance payment discount: I offer a 10% discount for work paid for upfront.
Winter/spring sale: I usually run a sale for work booked through my slow season, which is generally January through March. The sale usually runs in late fall, winter, or early spring.
DEPOSITS AND PAYMENT METHODS
A deposit is required to book most projects, but some exceptions apply. I accept payment via credit card, debit card, and bank transfer. I do not accept personal checks. For institutional payments, I prefer ACH or an electronic form of payment, but I will make exceptions when needed.
